  The DIAGNOdent or the “laser cavity detector” is simply that, a harmless laser operating at a wavelength that allows us to detect cavities not easily detectable with traditional methods! The DIAGNOdent measures laser fluorescence within the tooth structure. At the specific wavelength that the DIAGNOdent laser operates, clean healthy tooth structure exhibits little or no fluorescence, resulting in a very low reading on the units display. However, a tooth with a cavity will exhibit fluorescence resulting in elevated readings on the display. What does this mean to you? Simply, the DIAGNOdent allows us to detect cavities extremely early resulting in very conservative ways of fixing them. More tooth structure is saved and the longevity of the tooth is greatly increased. More importantly most early cavities can be restored without the use of anesthetic!
